Granite quarrying in Northern Portugal
From deposit to sett: inside the quarries of Northern Portugal, where granite extraction and cutting are a speciality recognised throughout the world.
Cutting granite setts in the quarry
Watch a worker cut granite setts directly in the quarry. This is where every sett is born: extracted from the deposit, sawn to the required size, then cleaved or bush-hammered depending on the finish.
The layers of the granite deposit
A granite deposit is not uniform: its colour and density change with depth. It is this natural stratification that gives rise to the colours of our setts.
Hardness, density and recognising quality granite
Granite is one of the hardest materials used in outdoor projects. Here is how to recognise a quality sett and what our standards guarantee.
Quality criteria
- Density: quality granite is dense and heavy, with no visible pores.
- Uniform colour: few shade variations within the same batch, except for the deliberately two-tone mixed granite.
- Finishes: clean edges, smooth or textured surface depending on use (anti-slip if needed).
- Regular cutting: determines the area per tonne — a 9x11x5 sett whose average thickness exceeds 5 cm gives less than 9.5 m² per tonne.
Standards & resistance
- EN 1341-1343: European standards for natural stone paving.
- CE marking: mandatory to market in Europe — compliant at Energialivre.
- Frost resistance: the deeper grey layers, being denser, withstand frost and thawing better.
- Compression: granite shows a compressive strength above 200 MPa.
- Maintenance: low — sweeping and washing with water, without acidic products.
